32. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progress from it to the full product?
Below I have evaluated how my skills of the three techniques; shot-reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action, have developed in the progression from my preliminary task to my film opening.
Shot-reverse shot/180 degree rule:
Shot-reverse shot/180 degree rule:
In my preliminary task I demonstrated both shot-reverse shot and 180 degree rule as shown below. A shot-reverse shot is a film technique which is used to show one character looking at the other character, and then this is reverse to the other character looking back at the first character. This technique is commonly used when the two characters are having a conversation, as shown through my preliminary task video. The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline concerning the on-screen relationship between the two characters within a scene and the camera must remain within 180 degrees of those two characters. The two techniques must be used in conjunction with each other, otherwise the shot will not work. For example, if the camera does not remain within 180 degrees, it will appear as though the two characters are facing the same way and not facing each other. Practising these techniques in my preliminary task video made me feel more confident with them, therefore I could use them in my film opening if I had chose to. However, I did not use these techniques in my film opening as I felt they did not fit into the horror genre. I did include a brief conversational scene, however the camera was mainly focused on the victim and we could only hear the killer's voice, therefore I used shots that were more suitable for my film opening. In addition, I also think that having a shot-reverse shot would not work in a horror related film opening, due to the fact that it would not create tension or suspense, and the main aim for my film opening was to convey tension. Having a conversation between the victim and antagonist also seems pretty unrealistic as the antagonist is only there to kill. The 180 degree rule was also not included in my film opening, due to the fact that it only applies when two characters are facing each other.
Despite not displaying shot-reverse shot and the 180 degree rule in my film opening, I have demonstrated match on action continually throughout. Below I have displayed an example of where I have used match on action in my film opening and also compared this next to my preliminary task. As we can see, the first image on the left hand side shows the victim running away from the side, and the second image on the bottom left hand side shows the victim running away from behind. My preliminary video shows a shot of Aida opening the door and the second shot shows a close up of her opening the door. Both my film opening and my preliminary task show some sort of action, which is carried on from one shot to another to show continuity. The continuity of the video shows the audience the same action, but from more than one angle, this is so they know exactly what is happening. I have tried to show a smooth continuity through both my film opening and my preliminary task so that all shots look like they flow from the previous shot.
Looking at the progression from my preliminary task to my full product, I believe that I have learnt a lot and improved a substantial amount. Despite not using both shot-reverse shot and the 180 degree rule in my film opening, I still have full knowledge of how they are used and how I have used them effectively in my previous task. However, my skills with the match on action technique has developed further in my film opening, as I have been able to depict it in a much more effective way compared to my preliminary task, therefore showing my improved and developed skills.
31. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Below is a collage that I created through PowerPoint. The collage shows all the different hardware, software and online tools that I have used throughout the process of creating my project. I have also used Prezi, where I have explained where I have used the different hardware, software and online tools and what I did and what I have learnt from using it.
